Everyone possesses one of these five elements.  Most typically it is wind, earth, or fire.  Through hard work they can become very efficient in these elements but must never stop working hard toward possessing all of these elements.

Someone of an intermediate level will begin to possess very good ability within their element and may be taking on some characteristics of the other elements. Where as, someone who is in the advanced stages of their training will become very effective in two or three of the elements.  This is where you will hear such terms as fire-water or hot-air.

By the time a student attains what is equivalent to a black belt, they should encompass more than one element and should be continuing toward being effective in the others. As one grows and becomes more experienced and knowledgeable they will become very effective in all of the elements.

What element(s) do think you possess? If you aren’t sure of your element don’t hesitate to ask.  In the meantime, keep working hard on all aspects of your training. Always strive to become balanced.

Earth Element

Sandstone

Characteristics of earth:  Balanced, Powerful, Stable

Positive – balanced, powerful, steady, stalks opponent, counter fighter, strong blocking/parrying.

Negative – little mobility, slow, limited range

MMA Style:  Typically will be very good at blocking and countering.  Will either let the attacker come to them and will block attacks and counter very efficiently or will steadily “stalk” the attacker. Earthy fighters usually possess one punch knockout power and will strategize the entire fight to land it.  Again, as with any element, too much of it can is a weaknesses that can be capitalized on by your opponent.  Earthy fighters want to focus on blocking, parrying, countering, and power techniques.  Mass is one of the elements of power and will make up for a possible lack in speed. Earthy fighters are probably the most opposite style of fighter from the Windy fighter.

Wind Element

Characteristics of wind:

Positive – elusive, good mobility, quick, fast, good range, hard to “get your hands around”

Negative – to flighty, doesn’t control the fight, lacks power

MMA Style::  Typically uses a lot of footwork in both offense and defense.  Gets in and strikes quickly and then back out again.  Is willing to play the “cat and mouse game” to achieve the results they want. The Windy fighter lacks power but makes up for it in speed and quickness.  This type of fighter wants to focus on perfecting their footwork, zoning, upper-body mobility and being able to close the gap quickly and efficiently.  Work on speed drills to increase power.  Speed is one of the factors of power so if they increase their speed they will become more powerful.  It is probably the most opposite style of fighter from the Earthy fighter.

Sand Storm

Fire Element

Campfire

Characteristics of fire:

Positive – throws technique with bad intent, opportunistic, aggressive, explosive

Negative– unfocused, unbalanced, lack of control

MMA Style:  This type of fighter will be able to identify and exploit their attackers mistakes.  They must be able to close the gap efficiently and take advantage of an opportunity.  Once this type of fighter has their opponent in trouble they will not stop until they have achieved control.  Someone possessing the Fire element can be patient, waiting for the right opportunity to attack and then doing so unrelentingly.  However, when not patient and unfocused they become “out of control”, an uncontrolled chaos and this will be a negative effect, a weakness.  This type of fighter will possess some quickness, power, and the ability to block and counter but is willing to take a shot to give many back.  Fire elements must work on reading an attacker, closing the gap, power, and blocking.

Water Element

Characteristics of water:

Positive – elusive, good mobility/flow, quick, fast, good range, hard to submit

Negative – to aggressive, lacks control, can over or under exert power

MMA Style: Typically uses a lot of footwork in both offense and defense.

Waves

Void Element

Silver Sphere

Characteristics of void:

Encompasses all of the characteristics of the other elements. -No weaknesses

MMA Style:  This is the element we all want to possess as a martial artist.  It takes years to achieve, a lifetime of martial arts study, and may not be attainable to many.  This type of fighter has enough experience and knowledge to be able to handle any situation or attacker with the greatest of efficiency making most any self-defense situation look effortless.  I personally know of no one that possesses this element.  Maybe someday, after years of hard work in the martial arts you may possess the void element.
